What OSFED can feel like

OSFED, or other specified feeding or eating disorder, does not fit neatly into anorexia, bulimia or binge eating disorder. Symptoms often shift over time, which makes it easy to dismiss. If any of this sounds familiar, it is worth talking to an OSFED dietitian.

A pattern that shifts

  • Restricting, then bingeing, then restricting
  • Urges to make up for what you ate
  • Night eating that feels out of control

In your head

  • Constant food and body thoughts
  • Telling yourself it is just a diet
  • Rules that change but never loosen

In your life

  • Avoiding meals out and social eating
  • Exercise that feels compulsory
  • Energy and mood that rise and fall

Not fitting a textbook is not the same as not needing help.

OSFED is as serious as other eating disorders, and it responds to the same evidence based care, whatever your body size.

What we work towards together

  • A steadier, regular pattern of eating
  • Fewer urges to restrict, binge or compensate
  • Loosening food rules and fear foods
  • Energy and headspace coming back

Everyone's recovery is different, and we work at your pace.

How OSFED nutrition support works

OSFED treatment with a dietitian rebuilds regular, adequate eating, whatever pattern the eating disorder takes, and loosens the food rules that keep it going. It is not a diet, and nothing involves counting or cutting.

Regular eating

Steady meals and snacks through the day settle the swings between restricting and bingeing.

Food rules

Working through the rules and avoided foods that keep your world shrinking, one step at a time.

Hunger and fullness

Rebuilding trust in your body's cues after months or years of overriding them.

Medical safety

Your GP monitors physical health, and with your consent we coordinate so nutrition and medical care line up.

Weight inclusive: every body size is taken seriously.

No label needed: we start with what is happening for you.

Choosing a dietitian for eating disorders: APD or nutritionist?

Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist in Australia, so training varies widely. When you choose a dietitian specialising in eating disorders, look for the Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) credential: a university degree in dietetics, ongoing training standards set by Dietitians Australia, and eligibility for Medicare rebates. Every dietitian at Bite Into Freedom is an APD.

Eating disorder dietitian fees and Medicare rebates

No surprises. Here is what a session costs and what you get back.

What you payFirst sessionReview session
Session60 minutes45 minutes
Fee$220$190
Medicare rebate$63.40$63.40
You pay after rebate$156.60$126.60

How the Medicare rebate works

With an eligible GP plan, Medicare pays back $63.40 a session, up to your plan's limit. Three steps and we handle the processing.

  1. Step 1

Get a plan from your GP

Ask for an Eating Disorder Plan or a Chronic Condition Management Plan. Your GP decides which one fits. A Mental Health Care Plan does not cover dietitians.

  2. Step 2

    Send it to our admin

Email your plan and referral to admin@biteintofreedom.com.au. We do the processing and set up your rebate.

  3. Step 3

    Your rebate is paid automatically

You add a card before your first session and payment is taken after each session. Your rebate usually lands in your bank account within 1 to 3 business days. Nothing to lodge.

Good to know

  • NDIS. If your plan is self managed or plan managed and includes funding for dietetics, you can use it here. Check with your plan manager or support coordinator first, then book an NDIS dietitian session. How NDIS dietitian funding works
  • Private health. Some funds cover dietetics under extras. We give you an itemised receipt. You cannot claim Medicare and private health for the same session.
  • Bulk billing. We do not bulk bill.
  • Changes. We ask for at least 24 hours notice to change or cancel an appointment. Late cancellations and missed sessions are charged the full fee, which Medicare does not rebate.

Eating disorder dietitian and psychologist, one practice

For most eating disorders, treatment guidelines recommend a team: a dietitian and a psychologist working together, alongside your GP. Your dietitian restores regular, adequate eating so your body and brain have the fuel for recovery. Your psychologist works on the thoughts, emotions and patterns that keep the eating disorder going.

At Bite Into Freedom both sit under one practice and, with your consent, they talk to each other. Our psychologists are AHPRA registered.

Still have a question?

Our intake team can help with fees, rebates and finding the right dietitian.

Getting started

Do I need a GP referral to see a dietitian for OSFED?

No. You can book your first session today without a referral. A referral only matters if you want a Medicare rebate, which needs an Eating Disorder Plan or a Chronic Condition Management Plan from your GP. If you already have one, email it to admin@biteintofreedom.com.au and we do the processing. If not, your dietitian can tell you which plan fits and what to ask your GP for.

How soon can I get an appointment?

We are taking new clients. Live availability is shown on the booking page, so you can choose a time now rather than wait for a call back. If nothing on the calendar suits, speak with our teamcall 03 9001 9100 and we will look at what is opening up across the team.

What happens in the first session?

Your first session is 60 minutes by video. Your dietitian asks about your eating across the day, the rules and patterns around food and what you want to be different, then you agree on first steps together. Nothing you share is judged. You complete an online intake form after booking, and your dietitian sends a telehealth link the day before or the morning of your session. Review sessions after that are 45 minutes.

I do not feel sick enough. Should I still book?

Yes. Feeling "not sick enough" is one of the most common reasons people with OSFED wait. Eating disorders are mental illnesses, not weight illnesses, and you do not need symptoms every day or a certain body size to deserve help. If food, rules or disordered eating are running your life, that is enough to book.

Do you see children and teenagers?

Yes. Samantha Wright, Sarah Why and Gabriela Salant see all ages, including children and teens, so please book under 18s with one of them. Tiarna Foster sees clients aged 18 and over. For children and teens, parents and carers are usually part of treatment. If your child also needs a psychologist, Eliza Hartley and Felicity Staedler see all ages.

Is there an OSFED dietitian near me?

If you live in Australia, yes. Our dietitians see clients by video, so you can work with an OSFED or disordered eating dietitian from home, whether you are in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Hobart, Darwin or a regional town. Medicare rebates apply to telehealth sessions the same way they do in person.

Understanding OSFED

What is OSFED?

OSFED, or other specified feeding or eating disorder, is the diagnosis for eating disorders that cause real distress and harm but do not meet every criterion for anorexia, bulimia or binge eating disorder. It includes atypical anorexia, bulimia or binge eating that happens less often, purging disorder and night eating syndrome.

Is OSFED as serious as other eating disorders?

Yes. OSFED is one of the most common eating disorders, and its physical and psychological toll can be just as significant. Not fitting one diagnostic box does not make it less serious, and it deserves the same level of care.

Is it disordered eating or an eating disorder?

Disordered eating covers patterns like rigid food rules, skipping meals or eating to cope that cause distress but may not meet the criteria for a diagnosis. An eating disorder such as OSFED is more persistent and has a bigger impact on health and daily life. Both deserve support, and you do not need a diagnosis to start.

Costs, Medicare and NDIS

How much does OSFED treatment cost, and what does Medicare cover?

Your first session is 60 minutes and costs $220, with a Medicare rebate of $63.40 and an out of pocket cost of $156.60. Review sessions are 45 minutes and cost $190, with the same $63.40 rebate and an out of pocket cost of $126.60.

An Eating Disorder Plan covers up to 20 rebated dietitian sessions in a 12 month period. A Chronic Condition Management Plan covers up to 5 rebated allied health sessions per calendar year, shared across all allied health. Payment is taken from your stored card after the session, and your rebate is usually in your bank account within 1 to 3 business days. We do not bulk bill.

Does an Eating Disorder Plan cover OSFED?

Yes. OSFED is one of the conditions an Eating Disorder Treatment and Management Plan covers, if your GP assesses that you meet the Medicare criteria. It allows up to 20 rebated dietitian sessions and up to 40 psychology sessions in 12 months. If you are not eligible, a Chronic Condition Management Plan covers up to 5 allied health sessions per calendar year. A Mental Health Care Plan does not cover dietitians.

Can I use NDIS funding or private health?

Yes, if your NDIS plan is self managed or plan managed and includes funding for dietetics. Check with your plan manager or support coordinator first, then book an NDIS dietitian session. Some private health funds also cover dietetics under extras, and we give you an itemised receipt. You cannot claim Medicare and private health for the same session.

Treatment and support

How does a dietitian help with OSFED?

Because OSFED symptoms can shift between restricting, bingeing and compensating, your dietitian works on the eating side of that cycle: rebuilding regular, adequate eating, closing the gaps that fuel binge urges, gradually bringing back feared foods, and helping you trust your hunger and fullness cues again. We work alongside your GP and psychologist, not instead of them.

Will you weigh me or put me on a strict meal plan?

We do not weigh you in sessions, and our care is weight inclusive. Structure, such as regular meal times, is built with you at a pace you can manage and never imposed. It is a plan for eating enough, never a diet.

Is a dietitian the same as a dietician or nutritionist?

Dietician is another spelling of dietitian, so an OSFED dietician is the same thing. Nutritionist is different: anyone can use that title in Australia. An Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) has a university degree in dietetics, meets Dietitians Australia standards for ongoing training and can offer Medicare rebated sessions. Every dietitian at Bite Into Freedom is an APD.

Does telehealth work for OSFED treatment?

Yes. Research shows telehealth for eating disorders performs comparably to in person care, and Medicare rebates apply to video sessions the same way. Your dietitian can work with your own kitchen and routine, where meals actually happen.

Safety and support

What if I need more support than regular sessions?

Our dietitians provide outpatient care by telehealth. If you need more support than regular sessions, such as a day program or hospital care, your dietitian will work with you and your GP to find the right level of care.
