The Hidden Reality

What Bingeing
Actually Feels Like

Binge eating is not a lack of willpower. It is a complex psychological response to emotional distress, restrictive cycles, and overwhelmed nervous system signals, requiring specialised psychological treatment.

The "Loss of Control" Panic

That moment in the kitchen where it feels like your hands are moving on their own. The rational part of your brain has switched off, leaving only the urgent emotional drive to consume.

The 9PM Pantry Search

You wake up wanting things to be different, yet by night you find yourself searching the kitchen. It's not "failing a diet", it's your nervous system seeking regulation after a day of mental or emotional overload.

"I promise myself
it's the last time."

We understand the specific toll this cycle takes on your wellbeing and self worth. Our role as psychologists is to identify the underlying emotional and behavioural patterns driving your binge urges, and provide the therapeutic tools to quiet the noise for good.

Emotional Drivers

Bingeing is often a coping response to anxiety, stress, trauma, or emotional overwhelm, requiring evidence based psychological therapy.

Neurodivergent Care

We identify how ADHD, autism, or sensory sensitivities interact with binge patterns, providing neurodiversity affirming therapy.

Weight Neutral

Sustainable recovery happens when we stop fighting the scale and start addressing the psychological roots with clinical precision.

Frequently Asked
Questions

Addressing common clinical and logistical questions regarding binge eating disorder psychology treatment.

Do I need a GP referral to see a binge eating psychologist?

No, you do not need a referral to book your initial consultation, you can access binge eating support immediately. However, if you wish to claim Medicare rebates, you'll need either a Mental Health Care Plan (for general anxiety or mental health concerns) or an Eating Disorder Management Plan (EDP) from your GP. We can guide you through this process during your first session.

How do Medicare rebates work for binge eating psychology?

Under a Mental Health Care Plan, eligible clients can access up to 10 rebated psychology sessions per calendar year. Under an Eating Disorder Management Plan (EDP), eligible clients can access up to 40 rebated psychology sessions per calendar year. We process your rebate after each session, with funds typically returning to your account within 24 to 48 hours.

How does a psychologist help with binge eating?

A psychologist helps you understand the emotional and psychological patterns driving binge eating. We work on identifying emotional triggers, addressing underlying anxiety or depression, building emotion regulation skills, and developing practical strategies to interrupt the binge cycle, without dieting or deprivation.

Is binge eating disorder a real eating disorder?

Yes. Binge eating disorder (BED) is a clinically recognised eating disorder and the most common one in Australia. It involves recurrent episodes of eating large amounts in a short period with a feeling of loss of control. It is not a lack of willpower, it is a complex condition that requires clinical psychological support.

Is your therapy weight-neutral?

Yes. We provide weight neutral psychological care. Binge eating recovery is about restoring a healthy relationship with food, not pursuing weight loss. We focus on addressing the psychological roots of binge urges and building sustainable emotional regulation skills.

Is telehealth effective for binge eating therapy?

Yes. Research shows that telehealth psychology for eating disorders is just as effective as in person care. Being in your own environment often makes it easier to discuss difficult topics and apply skills in real time, exactly where binge episodes typically occur.

I binge eat at night, can you help with that?

Night time binge eating is one of the most common patterns we see. It's often driven by emotional decompression, accumulated stress from the day, or unmet emotional needs. We help you identify what's psychologically driving the night time urges and build evidence based coping strategies that reduce them.

What's the difference between binge eating and overeating?

Overeating is eating past fullness occasionally, like at a holiday meal. Binge eating disorder involves recurrent episodes with a sense of loss of control, often followed by shame, guilt, or distress. If overeating feels compulsive and is affecting your wellbeing, it may be binge eating disorder.

Can binge eating be linked to emotional or stress eating?

Yes. Emotional and stress eating are common drivers of binge eating episodes. When food becomes a way to manage difficult emotions, it can develop into a recurring pattern. As psychologists, we help you understand your emotional triggers and build alternative coping strategies through evidence based therapy.

Can you help with binge eating and drinking?

Yes. Binge eating and alcohol often go hand in hand, alcohol can lower inhibitions and disrupt emotional regulation, making binge urges stronger. We address both patterns together and can coordinate with other health professionals if needed.
